Gray Hollow ยท Book One

Meet the Kids

Virginia, 1993. Four friends in a town where nothing is supposed to happen, and one dog who understands far too much.

Owen, Hanna, Samantha, Mikey and Milo the German shepherd, standing side by side on Gray Hollow's streets at dusk

The friends

They do it together. That's the rule.

  • Owen McCarthy: shaggy sandy hair, navy ball cap, headphones around his neck, red plaid flannel

    Owen McCarthy

    The tall one

He grew two and a half inches over one summer, and his bike feels smaller every morning. Six years of rec league ball, a mixtape recorded off the radio, headphones around his neck. Sixth grade is supposed to be his year.

  • Hanna Yamaguchi: round glasses, high ponytail, teal and purple windbreaker, green notebook

    Hanna Yamaguchi

    The observer

Hanna talks less than anyone, but when she does say something, it usually turns out to be right. Her dad teaches chemistry and runs the science club, so she practically grew up in that classroom. Her green notebook is always open. She's observing.

  • Samantha Washington: curly hair in a high puff, navy and white striped polo

    Samantha Washington

    The sharpshooter

The pastor's daughter follows all seventeen house rules. But all summer she's been writing down a strange hum in a black notebook, and hidden in her closet, inside a hollowed-out book, is a slingshot. She almost never misses.

  • Mikey Navarro: dark curly hair, big grin, bright green hoodie

    Mikey Navarro

    The funny one

A full head shorter than Owen, and he moves like he's the tallest kid in town. Brown belt (he'll tell you black), a bright green hoodie, and a joke for every silence. As long as people are laughing, they don't look too closely.

  • Milo, a young German shepherd with one ear up and one ear flopped

    Milo

    Mostly German shepherd

Mostly legs, with a black saddle on his back and ears that haven't decided whether to stand up or flop. Sheriff Woods found him shivering in a ditch off Route 9, with a torn ear and no collar. Nobody ever came for him. He understands far too much.
